how do people become fans of pages on facebook?
do people search for pages based on what they type to search or just go to other friends profiles and look at their pages?

Both. People can advertise they're stuff and suggest to friends and then it gets around, or you can search it.

That's right. You can search for whatever it is that you want and if you find it all you have to do is click become a fan.
