The iPad 2 will be faster than most netbooks, but as you watch videos you may find it to be a bit of a hindrance due to the whole Apple/Adobe Flash business. However, there is an app called Skyfire which may help you work around this problem. To be honest, I still think you're better off getting an iPad 2. Netbooks arguably have more features, but this makes them slower and for what you want it for you might as well get an iPad as it'll have all the features you need, plus access to the App Store.
An iPad 2 is currently going from £399, and if you want to be using Facebook and Twitter all day then you might need to invest in a 3G version which bumps up to £499 minimum plus a monthly plan. I don't know your situation though, so WiFi might be all you need.
You may also want to bear in mind that there have been rumours that Apple will release the iPad 3 in the not-too-distant future. The iPad 2 is very much an update of the iPad, whereas the iPad 3 is likely to be a complete upgrade with many new features - so if you buy an iPad 2 now then prepare for it to be outdated fairly quickly. (although I am basing this on speculations from various tech websites)
You may wish to consider (and I don't wish to over-complicate your decision EVEN more!) looking at Android tablets as well. The Android market is beginning to catch up with the App Store, although this depends on which apps you'll want to use. Somewhere in the region of 57% of Android apps are free, only 28% of App Store apps are free - although there are more apps on the App Store so the actual number may be similar. I'd suggest looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V. Bear in mind that you can have home screen widgets with Android, and it is open source so is customisable. Having said all this, I would still choose an iPad over most Android tabs, just because apps for Android don't always work because there are so many different devices running the Android OS so it's hard for developers to get their app to work on every device. But I digress.
You can get a keyboard dock for the iPad if you start struggling with on-screen typing.
To be honest, it's completely a judgement call, but based on what you've said I think an iPad 2 would fit the bill perfectly.
