Symbols and letters take on new meaning as they are used in new ways.
Pound sign becomes HashTag when used in twitter (and now facebook) but retains the 'pound' designation when used with weights and measures.

Period in grammar becomes Point in math but becomes Dot in internet addressing.

It's still called both, but the "hashtag" reference was publicized with social media like twitter instagram and facebook
