It was so successful because it was so simple to use and it was designed to be easy for users as at first it was only designed for use between colleges.

They make there money from the advertisements on the side of the page

The creator of Facebook did so at the perfect time, I'd say, just when the internet was starting to become used for more than just research and email. The concept is so simple and quick that it caught on, and I know no one that has just deleted their facebook account other than for privacy reasons, so people stay. And yes, the site does make it's money off the advertisements on the side, and as the site gets more and more popular, people pay more money to have their business their while you browse through the site.
