one month of my inbox disappeared, yesterday another week disappeared! what is going on?

Inbox emails Jun 14-July 13 gone; then yesterday July 15-19 disappeared; How can that just happen without me doing anything?
If I use mail search I can see a screen showing the emails received (which have disappeared from the inbox) but when I try to open them I get an error message “There appears to be a problem loading the email” and the retry button produces the same message. Help! Many important emails are vanishing and What should I do?

I do not believe this is the normal attempt to retrieve deleted emails....therefore...
