It starts as a cop out from reality, then remains as a form of conformity

May be people are more interested in other's lives than their own, IDK. but my concern about Facebook is, Don't people have control on themselves on what they post or do on up there?
Im concerned if the false trend about Facebook continues about what might happen to young generation who won't be able to meet real people in the real world like how some of us do now.

Because many people have no life. All they have is a computer and a facebook account with all their friends(?) listed there. For some, it's all about the numbers. There are even web sites where you can "buy" some friends to get your numbers up! How sad!

There's 4 possible reasons people get Facebook:

1. Games
2. To Complain about stuff
3. To convince themselves they have friends
4. To connect with people far away (altho this isn't a strong argument for someone to have facebook since there's a million other things that can do that like Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Facetime, and text messaging)

There are many reasons to like Facebook so much. People like Facebook because they can easily stay connected to their friends. They can like Facebook fan page of their favorite celebrates and get updates. They can share their favorite articles, photographs and videos with their friends and other people. Above all there are many useful and funny Facebook apps. You can play games or you can chat with your friends.

Another benefit of Facebook is that you can drive traffic to your blogs and online content. People can openly share there feelings and opinions about politicians, corruption or any burning topic and spread the message in very short time.

Recently in India there was a big movement against corruption and people were getting updations about that movement via Facebook. Over 497K Indian people joined Anna Hajare's Facebook fan page within few days to support him to fight the battle against corruption. This is the power of Facebook. If you know what happened recently in India then you will realize that Facebook has the power to switch, transform or even turn out any government.

Anna Hajare is a social worker and he is very common man. He don't have army but 450K common people and the whole young generation of India stand behind him to support his battle against corruption. This is the power of Facebook. That's why people like Facebook. Facebook helps immensely to increase alertness and awareness. It is a big source of information about whats happening in the world.

Facebook is a social networking site which enables you to connect with your friends or just anyone you want to be connected to. Users can talk to friends on the topics they are interested in. Using Facebook for long distance connection, people no longer uses phones for long-distance calls which have high costs, or mails which would take a longer time. I understand that people can use e-mails or long distance chats but they are a little private. Some people prefer to let their conversations be known so they become more approachable. People can connect even at long distances with more people any other devices could allow. Nothing connects more than 100 people other than Facebook.... or Twitter. A page can share an interesting new information for millions to know about instantly, such as pages of CNN, BBC and other news pages.

I can see from your question "what happen to the good old days?" that you are reminiscing old times when Facebook didn't exist. Well, I don't see Facebook as a bad thing. If you do think so, honestly it's your problem.
