How safe is Facebook application?

I have something puzzled my mind with regards to the application on facebook. As you may aware that there are abundance of applications developed by third party on facebook.

I wonder whether those applications are safe to be used since that once we want to use it, it requires to access our facebook basic profile info (e.g. user ID, networks, profile pic and others to name a few).

If i give the apps permission to run, I worry that it gonna silently updates my facebook status to promote unwanted things, thus spreading the message virally to my facebook friends and online contacts.

Look to the number of people who have already downloaded it. If it has tens or hundreds of thousands of users the app is fine, actually for the most part all apps are fine. If however the app seem brand new and has only a few people involved with it, then perhaps you should wait before installing it.

Social web sites are prone to many and varied attacks. Especially Facebook. There is no 100% safe method to use the APPS or the site.
