facebook photography profile yes or no?
im 18 and trying to start my photography business. i do portraits and weddings ( yes i have actually done a couple weddings and portraits for friends and stuff) as well as sell landscape scenery and nature photos.....i want to get my name out there more than just my friends....

this i what i thought about doing.... i have a fanpage on facebook but only a few friends like it.....

i thought about making an actual profile on facebook only for photography and add all my friends, clients and even potential clients from the school i attended and mutual friends i dont actually know.

on this profile i would update often with pictures and info about portrait sessions etc...

what do you think about doing that and adding lots of people, even mutual friends ( hundreds maybe even a thousand people total) i dont know so i can get my name out there..... some of them i would actually know but not all....??

Creating a Facebook profile for your photography isn't a bad idea. Facebook makes it easy for you to create albums for individual shoots, so you could organize your work pretty effectively. I would be careful about uploading high resolution photos since they've added download links to every photo in an album, and consider using watermarks on your photos to deter downloading and reposting.

The one flaw I see with your plan is in the way you plan to market your photography profile. Adding tons of people you don't know is NOT a good idea; Facebook actually includes a note in the Add Friend dialog box that says not to add people you don't know personally. Beyond that, it's considered rude and spammy to promote your business that way--exactly the opposite of the professional attitude you should be projecting.

Instead of adding all sorts of people, why not post on a local Craigslist advertising your services as a photographer? You could link to your photography profile on Facebook as a sort of online portfolio.

there is an option for a BUSINESS page on facebook - so i am informed by friends who also use it...

get yourself a page linked to your personal facebook page, and see what happens...

hope you have a portfolio of your exceptional photos available to use...

The one caution I have, especially if you're uploading photos of clients and unless its changed, the small print in Facebook states they have the right to use your photos. Whether they ever do or not is another thing but you might want to read the fine print and make sure you're okay with the terms and conditions.

That being said it's obvious that a ton of photographers are posting their work. However, one I know of uses FB as a business page but he links off FB to his own website thus avoiding putting his work on FB.
