My work is asking us to delete our employee facebook group?
So I will not mention the company name or anything, but I want to know what is the general opinion/legal side of what is happening with my work at the moment.

The employees of my work have a Facebook group page. It is private, and you can only become a member through invitation. No-one outside our workers has a view on our page.
So we do use it to perform shift swaps, update on anything at work, casual greetings to each other. But it will be admitted that occasionally we do use it to blow off steam at our managers (who are not part of this group) when something happens that we are not happy or fond about.
I am assuming someone in our group has told our managers of this, and now they are making us all sign contract about media and social policy, which I can understand that they do not want the company name ruined. I can also understand if the managers are put out at being complained about online. But the page is set specifically so only staff can see it, and no-one else.
They are now telling us to delete this Facebook group.
Now I get that complaining online about them is bad, and we can stop that. But we use this page for a whole lot of other stuff aside from that. In fact, 95% of what we use it for is important contact and updates.

So, are they actually allowed to force us to close our Facebook group down? If we were to stop any bad complaining, are they really able to make us do that? Because contact with each other becomes a lot harder then.

Cheers for any thoughts.

They are allowed to ask you to delete it, but unless they report it to facebook for hateful content it does not have to come down. Also if you're employers are looking at what you do on Facebook it is an invasion of the groups privacy as they had no permission, if anything you have every right to tell them to fuck off.
