Are the 8 friends appearing on your profile chosen randomly? (fb)?

I'm talking about the 8 friends who appear on the profile page on facebook timeline. Are they chosen randomly? I have 300 friends, but only seem to see 10-15 friends ALWAYS on that list and no other friends. (those same 10-15 friends appear on the smaller list of 6 friends at the top)

Facebook says they're chosen randomly, but from YOUR experience is it really random? Or are they the people who you think could be visiting your profile a lot?

For me it seems like it's the people I interact with a lot, but also some people I never interact with, but I think could be visiting my profile a lot. (2 had admitted to have a crush on me in the past for example) What is YOUR opinion on this fb "mystery"?

If you look at someone else's profile then their friend list starts off with people who are mutual friends with you.

If you look at your own profile, it does appear to be people who you interact with a lot. However, my friend who died in 2007 and hasn't logged in since is right in the middle of my full list. The top 15 or so seem to be people I interact with a lot, but the rest of the list is pretty mixed. Of course I'm human and humans often see patterns where there aren't; some of the people I am closest to are ones I mainly talk with outside of Facebook.

I use the lists features for categorizing my friends, so it may use that as part of it.

it goes by mutual friends and such...a common misconception is those people are the ones who "stalk" you the most. That is a fallacy...check out instaguff.com for more answers to your question

some people ive forgot that they exist on facebook and once they were in the 8 friend thing

The friends showing on your profile are not displayed randomly.
It keeps on changing and depends your most recent interaction with them, their latest update.
So simply those who have recently update anything the latest one's are shown in your profile.

There are two things, (1) when you view your own timeline (2) when someone else view your timeline.

For the 2nd, those are common friends randomly picked.

For the 1st, I have the same thinking that those are the person you interact with most, but not necessary profile, probably those who look at your posts / albums a lot.
