Is this a date or are we just hanging out?

So he texted me today asking if I wanted to meet up sometime this weekend because we wouldn't be seeing each other for a while. I wouldn't say we're that close, but at school we see each other a lot even though we're quite busy and have different friendship groups.
He keeps hinting he likes me, especially on facebook but he never made a move or anything so I didn't think much of it, and it's really strange because he never really bothered getting to know me until recently.
We're going to the movies and then most likely shopping. I'm not quite sure what else we'll do, is this a 'date' or does he just see me as a friend or what actually is it? We're both 17, so we're not kids. Thanks.
