It more or less depends on what type of 'idea' you have. If it is a new product, one of the safest and easiest ways to market it, is to set up a website, and use free sites, like facebook and twitter to get hits, and get people talking about it.

Another idea is to talk to newspapers, radio stations, etc, using your idea as a promo (like a really funky t-shirt to give away.... everybody loves free stuff)

Also try tradeshows, so people can see your product up close and personal.

Free ad sites, like kijiji, or craigslist are also great ways for a low budget marketing plan.

One of the first things you will want to do before starting the marketing though is get it patented, check out possible competition and develop a business plan (if this is going to be a business for you)
