I believe yes.
-comparing to other profiles
-comparing to other people's pictures
-comparing to other people with boyfriend
-profile popularity (how many "likes" one gets)
-cyber bullying.

I think they raise self esteem. At least, for me personally. I have got a lot more popular since I joined facebook. I do get where you're coming from, but I think its good to compare yourself to other people.
The debate will continue xxx

Yes, being member of a social networking site like facebook can definitely lower a person's self esteem.
This is because people tend to exaggerate the positive in their lives and tend to only post the most extreme things that have been happening to them.
If your life is not as wonderful or extreme as what you see on facebook then congratulations you are a normal person!
So, yes, definitely paints an incorrect picture of life.
And an interesting question to post, especially around Valentine's Day when so many singles are reminded by many of their friends that they are alone, for now.
Well, you all are not alone in being alone. Smile So let's some of us get together!

Yes because on fb and other sites you see the ugly people and the pretty people have the most followers. So Ugliest Girl Alive as she calls herself has 600+ followers on Twitter, Ugly People Problems has 870 000 followers on Twitter, and the beautiful ones have thousands of followers usually up to 30 000 followers. The average looking ones are just ignored / overlooked.

Yes. You hear people saying "oh she's very pretty" which causes you too compare and be jealous because you want to be noticed. When they don't notice you, it causes you to feel uncared for therefore hating yourself because you believe that something's wrong with you.

Most definetly. For example I've seen those elimination game things are very common now, they are not good for anyone's self esteem (unless you win).
