Are all apps available on all kinds iphones?

I am getting my dad's old iphone 3gs tomorrow. I want to get stuff like instagram, temple run and draw something. Are they only available on the iphone 4 or does it not matter?

In theory all iPhone apps should work on all models of iPhones but most recent apps may have only been designed for the more recent iPhones with better hardware (better processor, better graphics and more RAM) so while they might run, the apps may be slower or crash from time to time.
