why wont my parents let me be a normal teenager?

im a teen girl. i live in a smallish town. my mom mainly wont let me be a normal teenager. im not allowed to wear makeup, have social media... ok so i hve an instagram but my mom says i cant have my face on it. its kinda depressing having to watch around making sure no one is takong pictures of me to keep it off instagram. i dont even want to post "selfies" i just want to post pictures of me and my friends at the mall. eveytime i ask her the answer is no and she starts preaching about like someone is gonna come and like stalk me. and she makes me watch these movies about people who get kidnapped because of facebook or something. i try to explain MY INSTAGRAM IS PRIVATE. i dont think this is fair. help?

Geeze, our mothers must have been separated at birth. I almost had my picture published in the paper as part of a story and she went nuts and called the editor and made him promise not to do it. Why? I was going to be stalked. I mean how many other photos of young women appeared in the media that day? Millions upon millions? I'm sure not every single one was stalked. And now with the internet? Please.

I think that she is more afraid that if she gives you and inch that you will take a mile. Kids tend to do things rashly w/o thinking them thru. I'm not saying that you will, but I bet she thinks if she opens the door a little, you'll be tempted to open it the entire way.

I do think she is overreacting; and she's been brainwashed by the evening news and Lifetime TV. Yeah, bad things can happen, but they won't necessarily happen. Parents loose sight of that sometimes. And I think its a really bad idea (as in abusive) to expose you to those awful stories - hearing that over and over does more harm to your sense of well being than something bad happening one time in real life.

Try to make a deal with your mom, if she stops talking about the dangers and showing you those awful movies, you will use your instagram account responsibly and keep it private Let her see what you post.

Otherwise, just wait until you are 18 and can pay for whatever you want on your own phone.
