Why do i have so many friend requests on facebook?

so i just made my facebook and i added 2-3 friends. the next night i checked my facebook and i had like 80 friend requests from people at my school. some of them i havent talked to in years and were never friends with them. do they automatically add me? I dont understand why i have so many. does facebook add them for you or is it just because people wanted to add me?

Facebook didn't not automatically add them, they all want to be your facebook friends. Being friends on facebook doesn't mean you're actually friends, it just means you know each other. People like to try to have as many "friends" as possible, whether or not they actually know each other well.

Because most people add at least 1/10th of their school population.

The people from your school probably just want to have more friends on their friend list (to boast about it) or they consider you as a friend.
