How do I stop "nearby" friend notifications on Facebook?

Some of my friends (some of which I never really speak to anymore) on Facebook like to tag themselves where they are on Facebook and they keep appearing in my notifications, they are really annoying and I just want to know how I can stop this. Example of this is Joe Bloggs is nearby at the cinema about to watch a film.

Delete your facebook. Even if you stop this notification, they'll roll out some new feature by summer and you'll have to figure out how to stop that one too.
