Even though I switch off the chat can my friends still know that I am on facebook right now?

I usually keep doing fb but I don't like to chat so I switch off the chat. But my friend told me that though you switch off your chat and make yourself not available but I can still know if you are currently doing fb or not. She also told me that I know when you used to be on fb. She said though you switch off chat but I can still see that you are online right now but just made yourself invisible. I ask her how is that possible because when I switch off the chat how can you see me. She said that in chat box and on left side of screen the list of both online and offline people comes. So a green dot is seen in front of online people while those who has made their setting offline, their names can still be seen in chat box but a green dot do not appear in front of their name.

CAN THIS BE TRUE?

Or she is just joking. As such whatever she said it somehow makes sense coz even I see a list of people in chat box and also on left of my screen but only some of them are available while few other names are seen but green dot is not on their name. What is this? If once I switch off chat then why should people know tht I am doing fb but just switch off chat. If my friend is true than fb is pathetic. But I highly doubt if she is true.

If chat is switched off, your friends will not see you on chat, but they will know that you are on Facebook because they will see everything you post as you post it. That's the only way people will know you're on. If you don't want anyone to know you're using FB, then make sure you don't post anything while you're on.
