What does this change in relationship status on Facebook mean?

From 'In a relationship with _____' to just 'In a relationship'.
Why does it sometimes change from one to the other, does this mean that the other person in the relationship has changed their settings to single or hidden it?

Just a bit worried about a friend that's all. We heard that he was upset but we haven't seen him today and all I know is that changed on his Facebook.

It just means he took the person off but kept the status.

Usually that means that one person in that relationship has changed their status and the other person has not changed theirs so it says they are still in a relationship for example:

My friend JJ was going out with this girl called Anita.
He ended it and changed his relationship status to single.
She however (because she doesn't go on Facebook a lot) didn't change hers.
So it stayed to "In a relationship" it just didn't say who with.

Its simple
In a relationship - means your dating someone but keeping it anonymous.
In a relationship with ______ - means that people have it saying their together with eachother.
