Here are some suggestions:

~ The best way to gain new followers on Instagram is to provide content that is valuable to users.
- Nobody wants to be bombarded with detailed photojournalism projects on what you had for lunch or how cute your feet look in those new sandals.

~ Use hashtags.
- It can help you attract users who are searching for a particular type of photo or subject. (For example, if you take a picture of the Eiffel Tower, include "#paris" or "#eiffeltower" ).

~ Follow and compliment other users (Compliment only if you mean it).

~ Share your Instagram photos across your other social networks.

~ Be active and post pictures on that site often/frequently. But Not too often/frequently.
- Post about 2-4 pictures every day or every other day. Don't hoard it with posting 5-10-20 pictures constantly.

That's about it. It will take some time so don't hope to get followers quickly. It takes time and determination.
