It's called a hashtag & means the subject to be discussed.

It's a hashtag. They are commonly used with trending topics. You can hashtag anything. For example if I hashtag #Bored . It will let me click on the hashtag and it will show me everyone who has recently hashtag #Bored.

This # is called a hashtag. It is used to say that this word is the topic (subject) in twitter or any other site. Example: #Olympics. Find out more on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashtag
