Are protected tweets above the law?

In the United States (NJ), if you have you twitter account privacy settings set to protect your tweets (where only people you exclusively accepted follow request from can access your tweets/posts/content), can police access this and use this against me in the court of law or would they need my permission (twitter exclusively states they do not own your tweets, and you are still the owner of them) or a warrant to access them and use them against me?

analogy (if it helps): would my twitter account set to protected needing my permission for others to access them differentiate from a locked door that needs my key for others to access whats inside.

If you don't want people to see it, don't put it on the inter webs...That is excellent life advice.

You have to expect that if they police come asking, any company will cooperate.

Police can get a warrant and access tweets, if they can't just see what they want without it.
