You can just go to the 'account' tab and here is an option there to deactivate your account, if you want to permanently delete your account then search the Internet and there are some pretty good guides out there which could help you.

Click the gear on the top right corner by your timeline button and all of that.
Then click "Account Settings" Then click "Security" on the left Then click "Deactivate Account" in blue at the bottom Then click on the reason you're leaving, provide additional details if applicable, and click okay. |

you can deactivate FB but all you have to do is log back on to reactivate it and all your data is still there. Your better off trying to cancel, but edit you profile as much as you can, and it supposed to delete in 14 days? But I took a 4 year absence and it didn't take long to get my account up an running, proof that they keep the data?

To deactivate your account :
Open the Account dropdown menu at the top right corner of Facebook and choose Account Settings. Select Security from the left-hand menu. Click on "Deactivate your account." When you deactivate your account, your profile and all information associated with it disappears from the Facebook service immediately. People on Facebook will not be able to search for you or view any of your information. If you’d like to come back to Facebook anytime after you’ve deactivated your account, you can reactivate your account by logging in with your email and password. Your profile will be restored in its entirety (friends, photos, interests, etc.). Remember that you will need to have access to the login email address for your account in order to reactivate it. |
