Local Search Engine Optimization?
Does anyone know how to do SEO locally? I was told by an SEO company that my website is good, but I need to setup SEO locally, not just nationwide. Usually, I research keywords to optimize my website, but when I search keywords with my city name in the search, I get nothing. So am I supposed to search the city name and the keyword, or am I doing something wrong? I want to target my tristate area but I am not sure how to locally optimize my website. I've read some articles, but they are very confusing...please help!

It's important to be able to show a business address on the Contact US page, it's probably helpful to get al the free business directory listing that you can, using the exact same format address each time.
Links from local sites, like your city's chamber of commerce may help, as do articles that name local Venus. Don't list give big lists of cities, this may be judged to be SEO spam.

A free Google maps (places) page ma be the quickest way to appear in local search results, they are the ones with the A-G labeled stick pins, once you confirm ownership off a mailed postcard you can customize the Google+ page they setup for the business as well as increasing the number of categories checked off. Google.com/placesforbusiness/ gets you started.

At one time vitations on other directories and user comments were big places pages ranking factors, now it seems the ranking of your company site most influences your places pages result, which mus be in the top 7 to get on the prized first page of results.
If your some mobile service with no business address, try to get a mailing address, perhaps a friend with a store front, those ups store sort of PO Boxes worked for a while, but nit so much ow.

Take up Jake's advice and get a Google local listing.
Do the same with Bing.
Make sure you have a local telephone number (as text ant as an image).
In your about us page, mention your location alongside the services you offer.

1. get yourself a local domain i.e. of the country where you have the business or wish to conduct business

2. have a good contact us page with you local address and register for google places - its simple.

3. ensure you include keywords with the location in your content

4. ensure your title, meta kws & decrip match you local business requirements. no doubt they must also sync with the page content.

5. find local websites / directories / listing sites or sites which have such targeted pages and list your business there.

6. write about your business using articles, press releases etc with a focus on locally targeted keywords.

this should get you on the road to success in no time. continue to read up on new resources
