Will be SATA III HDD compatible with my motherboard on laptop?
Hello, my old WD hdd is gone and I would like to buy a new one into my laptop. The previous one was Sata 2 and the new one, I would like to buy, is sata 3 (it is cheaper). So is there a possibility of running this hdd on my laptop (Lenovo g570) without troubles? I heard they are all backward/forward compatible but still not sure if it really is like i heard it. Thanks for help

Hello Marek,

It would definitely be advisable to check with your manufacturer's website to ensure compatibility. That said, the hard drive will likely work. If your motherboard only supports 2 gb/s then data will only move that fast even though your hard drive is capable of faster.

SATA3 is compatible with SATA1 and 2 - will work as fast as the SATA1 or 2 ports support.

As Menace says SATA-3 is back compatible with the earlier SATA standards.

However I feel compelled to point out that SATA-I, SATA-II and SATA-III or the SATA-1, -2, -3
are incorrect nomenclature.

The proper names are "SATA 1.5", "SATA 3.0" and "SATA 6.0"
