Why do people take so many selfies?

This goes for both guys and girls, I mean everyday friends of mine on facebook post pictures of themselves posing in ways to try to impress, smiling, smooching their lips, infront of bathroom mirrors, flexing etc. I mean if it were someone else taking the photo for them, I would say nice pic but i have some friends who have over 300 photos of just their face, literally i sh*t you not just their face. Why?

Just to ensure they still have functioning nose, eyes and mouth on their face. You know, just in case one of these fall out or something on their way home.

Those are really boring, needy people. They took one, someone told them they were pretty, and now they NEED to hear it constantly. It's pathetic.

We live in the era of attention wh0res and people with a low sense of self approval.
So they need to constantly be assured that they're 'perfect' by taking 'selfies' and asking others to approve of their looks.
Kind of sad, really.
