its like you are adding tags/keywords to what you just said. for example when you publish a post on a website you can add tags or keywords so if you search #cheapcars only search results relating to cheapcars will come up. so its just like that. at least thats what i think, i could be wrong. :/

Some websites are set up to let their users use hashtags as a piece of indexing code that groups all messages that use a given hashtag on the same page.

On Twitter for example you can use hashtags on any word, #House #Banking #Cats
and you can go to the search pane on the toolbar at the top of the twitter page and type in #Cats for example and a page will open up that has all the latest tweets where people used the hashtag #Cats.
