A Facebook love story?

A year (or more ago) I received a friend request on FB by a guy I went to primary school with.
Throughout the year we have talked on and off and recently we have been talking a lot again.
Conversation goes really well and we have a bit in common.
Sometimes I don't reply to his messages but more often than not he doesn't respond to mine.
While sometimes he does initiate the conversation - again - I'm the one who does it more often than not.
We go to the same uni and he seems like he wants to catch up there.
I'm hesitant about sending him a message asking if he want's to hang out.
I don't want to sound to keen and recently I've been the one initiating the conversation.

Should I just leave it and see if he asks to hang out first?
Or should I just go for it?

Also guys - if you were the guy in this situation would you think I was coming on too strong?
