how can i find out more about a person online for free?

i bought a pencil case from an antiques fair and on the back there is a name and address engraved Alan Robinson 45 Hornby St Wigan and i want to find out more about who this person is and whether he is still alive, how can i find out this, ive tried ancestory.com but it came up with thousands of people called alan robinson but i thought because i had an address that would be helpful???

You might try the public library of Wigan and see if they have any local microfilm newspapers.

No idea why people think genealogy research s about living people , DEAD ancestors, not living people..........If they are over 18 and living in their own/rented property then 192.com will give you limited free information, two are there up to 2009 or if you have the Wigan phone book you can look for free....... the library may have it if you haven't, where you can also look at the electoral roll too for free.....also try social media

What is the era of the pencil case? That will give you some clue as, presumably, he would have been a schoolboy when he owned it so if you can put a rough date on it then you have some indication of what age he would be now and when he may have lived at that address. Old telephone directories might give you a match for Robinson at that address. At a guess the British Library would have an archive of these.

I suppose you have already tried writing to the Wigan address to see if he or someone who knew him is still there?

Alan S Robinson is down as living in Hornby st , up to 2004. and is 65+.
