If employers access your *hidden & private* Facebook and discipline you, isn't that a violation of privacy?

I've been seeing more an more articles lately over people getting fired or not getting jobs over what their employers may see on facebook. My question is, if you set your settings so only friends can see your profile and have no connections to your work, employers cant see it right? And if they do get around that setting and see lets say, bad comments about them on facebook, wouldn't it be illegal for them to use it against you because they acquired it by illegal means (violating your privacy)? You can sue them right back!

no. you cant

here is the deal dude. its the internet. if you put it on the internet, and someone wants to find it, they can, and will. even your "private" facebook isnt even remotely private. someone i know comments on a picture of you. i just have to go on their profile, it will say "so and so has commented on whatshisnames picture" and it will let me see the picture they commented on. same with statuses, and all sorts of other stuff. from there you can look at the entire album and the whole wall. you dont even need to be a hacker, you just have to click on a few links put there by facebook itself.

there is no such thing as privacy on the internet. if you dont want someone to find out about it, keep it off the internet. putting stuff on facebook is tantamount to gossiping about it in a bar. even if you have no one you work with on your facebook, if one of your friends has looser lips (or fingers as the case may be) word gets around. you get tagged in photos, a friend of a friend sees it. or you dont notice that one of your coworkers happens to be in the same group as you because they have 438924729837498 fans or something.

the long and short of it is that absolutely nothing you put on the internet is ever completely private. ESPECIALLY facebook. you dont even have to TRY on facebook. a few well placed clicks and you can see every picture, every post, ever comment someone has ever made.
