Facebook and timeline ?

What is the purpose of timeline that been recently added to facebook web pages ?

Like the rest of Facebook, no usable purpose at all. Just another way to get information out of you.

It's Just a style, some people like the Timeline layout better than the original layout so they can choose to use Timeline. Once you choose Timeline you can not go back to the original layout.

You can go back to dates without scrolling all the way down through your profile. For example, if you wanted to see a Christmas post, you could click December and it would be right there.

Adding to what Keesha said, some Facebook users were involuntarily switched over to Timeline (including myself) - I did not choose to switch to timeline yet I was. I find this layout switch annoying and jumbled all over the place.
