How can I become a big movie director ?
They say that America is a place of opportunities, well I wanna be a movie director, what you guys think. Now about me, and my present situation. I am a 21 year old guy, born and raised up in India - came to USA when I turned 18 - now here for 3.5 years - now doing nursing because my parents and relatives want me to be a nurse at first, and something bigger later in medical field. Even though I just hate medical field, I wanna be a BSN nurse at first, so I have a base and profession in hand.

Photography, that's all I know, and I really do it pretty good I believe. You can check my photographs in my page in the link below. Camera drives me every time, photography, and travelling are my passion in my life. Whenever I say my film director dream to my mom, she says "you never gonna get there, so forget it and study". My mother is the kindest person in my family, I cannot talk about this to anyone else.

What should I do, where should I go, what college, what degrees .........lots of question...one more thing, I don't have any friends here for making shot films, and I don't know how to make friends, moreover no time, but I am a pretty good team worker, I work in a Publix, and I know I am good at team work. Also, I could do anything only after doing BSN, as I am still under my family's control. Also, I dont think I have the potential to write stories, but I can make a script to a movie through a camera, I strongly believe that.

What should I do, where should I go, what college, what degrees, whom to contact.......?????
Thanks in advance

Aby,

I'll you how, and it does not involve becoming a nurse.

Select a GOOD film school, like UICLA/Berkley,

USC, or The Actor's Studio.

Work your A** off.

Do an outstanding Senior movie project.

Get you degree, MFA.

Get a job with a major studio, like Universal,

with some idependents.

Do two or three very fine projects, and then,
ask your producer for a big budget movie.

That's exactly what Spielberg did.

Check out Spielberg's professional history.

It's not what you think.

So, be a nurse, or be in the film industry.

I strongly encourage you to chase after your dream if you have the determination. Understand that the film industry is a very competitive industry and the only people who make it in the industry are the determined, the talented, and the experienced.
You said that you don't think you can write stories.. well i don't mean to be harsh, but you cannot be a film director is you cannot create and understand stories. It is the most important part of the job. However, you said that you could make a story into a movie through a camera. If you truly are in love with movies and want to go into the industry, i would strongly suggest you become a cinematographer. He's the guy who creates the camera angles and actually shoots the film.

I would suggest going to a 4-year film school in Los Angeles. The best film schools in the country reside either there or in New York. In LA, you should take a look at the University of Southern California, the University of California - Los Angeles, Chapman University, California Institute of the Arts, or the American Film Institution.
Other good schools include Columbia University and New York University in NY, University of Texas - Austin, and Columbia College Chicago.
All of these schools are pretty pricey, but they are the best which film has to offer.
A degree in film production or film studies is what you're gonna be looking at. Most likely a BFA.

I think it would be very good of you to complete your nursing program before going to film school. Then, if you cannot make a career out of the film industry (which many can't), you will still have a career to fall back on.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me.
