it is the adverisements because it doesnt cost anything to be on it. Advertisements cost more than you think. Commerials in the superbowl were millions of dollars. every page you turn to there are advertisements on the side of the page.

It's not just about the number of ads, it's the number of people seeing them that people pay for.

Also, at the moment, Facebook is not a publicly traded company, so it's being kept afloat by private investment. I suspect that they may be bought out by another company at some point (Microsoft already has a stake in them). Facebooks primary asset is it's loyal user community which is very valuable.
