How to react to celebrities speaking out about global warming?

Funny that questions like that don't come up for "Lord" Monckton, David Rose of the DailyMail or Anthony Watts.

Celebrities are public figures and citizens, they should speak out on topics that interests them. It's up to the audience to evaluate what is presented. Same goes for politicians.

what's really interesting is that Neil Young's concert sold out in Calgary. Obviously he has support.

I don't understand anybody caring about an entertainer's political views. And I really don't understanding Canadians caring about Neil Young. He fled that country 50 years ago for Southern California, Why do you care about somebody who does not even want to live in Canada? Why promote him?

Clearly his fans are well aware of his views. You can't separate his music from them. He along with many musicians (Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Rait, Charlie Daniels, Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp .... ) have long tried to promote the cause of the little guy against big government and big business. If that makes them all libbies, well so be it. They are musicians, artists. What was the last song you enjoyed that promoted big government or big business and told the individual to stop complaining; there aren't a lot of songs like that.

Celebrities don't change the world, at best they raise awareness. It would appear that Neil did that. The open pit mining of the oil sands can be seem from space, maybe that looks like Hiroshima to some people.
The bitumen that is being piped to the mid west now sells for less than $60 a barrel and does make the heating oil there more affordable. When the pipeline is extended to the Koch refineries in Texas do you think they will care if China offers the higher price.
As someone living in Alberta I know that the whole story has been suppressed and when the attention is brought to the situation there will be changes.

Global Warming ended in 2012, confirmed by our Satelite reports 11/28/2012 that ICE is Accumulating on different parts of earth. Today is the same weather that we had in the 1970's before Global Warming. Mike

Neil Young is and always has been a cry-baby. I doubt he will ever stop sucking on his mommy's nipples in his dreams.

I would have though every one would have understood that when Neil Young talked about Fort McMurray, that he meant the oil sands (although you are technically correct.) I have added a couple of images [1,2] so you can compare the oil sands near Fort McMurray with Hiroshima so you can see for yourself how he could make that comparison. The smell in Fort McMurray is discussed within the Fort McMurray comunity [3] and people downstream do have a higher then expected cancer rate [4] Neil Young was for the most part correct.

It is worth noting that Canadians spend, through their taxes, $2.8B a year to subsidize (what is for the most part) a private businesses. [5] and maybe Canadians should have an informed debate rather then accepting what the Federal government tells them in their tax funded, $22 million oil sands advertisements. [6] A government I might add that is destroying the contents of health science libraries because claiming to reduce cost, the libraries cost 1.75 million a year before privatization and Ironically the privatization actually increased costs.

An irresponsible rant would be cherry picking oil sands and throwing in a "leaving five luxury buses idling" reference while destroying science libraries and spending $22 million on an advertising campaign promoting the oil sands. Do you see the difference?
