Mainstream marketing can broken down to two generalities:
1. Mainstream can be the actual medium used for marketing - magazines, newspapers, television, radio are the most mainstream of marketing venues
2. Mainstream can also relate to the content - something that appeals to a wide audience could also be considered mainstream; however, I believe that you are looking for #1 in this instance

Why would someone want to also use social marketing (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) is simple, Social Networking is growing way faster than traditional marketing, so, the safe bet is that someday, the Facebook's & Twitter's of the world will become the mainstream for marketing,
