Could anyone explain what Times Square means in this sentence?

Sorry about the long passage, just to give you some background information.
If investors had been able to swap out Mark Zuckerberg in Facebook's early history (considered the prudent course by many at the time), it's not clear the company would have evolved into a world-bestriding giant. Equally, if VCs had succeeded in totally sidelining Page and Brin (again, an option considered at the time), Google's brilliantly successful landing page would probably devolved into a tatty Times Square.
Could anyone explain the relationship between googles landing page and Times Square in this sentence?

First, we find the definition of "tatty".

"Worn and shabby; in poor condition."

Second, Times Square. Times Square is BUSY. Trust me, you can't go anywhere without being yelled at or having some sort of insane sensory overload from all the advertising. The best thing about Google is that the web page is simple and easy to use/understand.

I think the point is that, if it weren't for people who refused to whore their websites out to advertisers, then those websites wouldn't be as popular as they are today.
