Can facebook friends accidentally be deleted?

There are a couple people I know that I added as a facebook friend when I first got it. When I stumbled on their profiles again it's as if I did not add them at all. They probably had just removed me, but I really don't know a reason why they would so I was wondering if there was a bug or something that could have caused either myself or them to remove one another as friends?

Either they did delete you for some reason or it was a mistake as you said. I do not know of a bug that can cause something like that and I think that is highly unlikely. The best thing you can do is ask them why they did that if you are close to them. If not, then now you know that they don't consider you to be their friend.
In the end...its just facebook and its best if they stay away if they're acting like that.
