How much to charge for social media consulting?
Hi,
I'm 15 years old and very in touch with social media, I earn money from YouTube Videos from Google's Adsense, and am on all major social media websites and use them both personally and from a business perspective myself, to give you an example of my knowledge.

A friend's parent is looking into Social Media for their small business (just them at the moment employed) and wanted me to provide Social Media as a way to connect with customers / fans of the business, and wanted to know how much I charge.

I am looking at a flat rate to start off, then a monthly fee, I don't want to charge per hour as that could be difficult to work out.

Basically, I'm not too sure on how much I should charge, I would like to make a decent amount but also a friendly one.

If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated

Thanks Smile

I know google ads charge from $.50-$50/click (meaning if some one clicks on your ad, your charged that amount). These are the ads on the side of the google search engine. You should figure out how many views you are getting on average each month, and find the flat rate. Google obviously charges stupid amounts of money. If its your friend's parent, I would try to come up with something extremely reasonable, and treat him like a customer (if you give him a great deal, he is more likely to go off and tell his other "business friends" (or whatever you would like to call them), and they will be more interested in you, meaning more money in the long run. In my opinion, i would charge half a cent per view, meaning if you get 5000 views in a month, your profiting $25+ the money from social media sites. This would be ALOT cheaper for the small business owner, and it's alot easier for customers to notice them. Lets say you have another 5 businesses wanting to get in on this, that $25/mo. on the 5,000 views/mo. just turned into $125/mo. Eventually once you have more clients + viewers , you can increase your prices per click, and you will earn more $$$.

Goodluck, and I hope this works!

James - good for you!

This is the point where you stop being a kid who likes social media and start to become a businessman. It doesn't happen overnight, but you can help yourself (and your customers) by making the transition as smooth as possible.

Keep on the right side of the taxman by registering as self-employed (and yes, you do have to - although national insurance isn't payable until you are 16, so park that for now). See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/tmas...ess.shtml.

If you are going to charge for your services, you will need a contract. 'Friendly' might be fine until something goes wrong; but start as you mean to go on, by being professional. The phrase 'never do business with friends' was coined for a reason!

An hourly rate should actually be easier to work out than a flat fee, particularly if neither party is sure how much work is involved. See what others in this field are charging and take a realistic look at how you compare.
