How does instagram work and whats the purpose of it?

Instagram is a worldwide photo sharing community. You take pictures, edit them if you want, and post them on instagram. People can then like your pictures, comment on them, and follow you. There are also contests held on there all the time by random people for random things. Sometimes small things, like a picture drawn for them, and sometimes larger things like iTunes gift cards. It's a very fun way to interact with people around the world in an artistic way.
