Social Norms for Media Class....?
For my mass media class we have to study social norms can someone tell what that is? Also I have to pick a t.v. show and i picked MacGyver, and from that we have to decide what social norms and expressed or challenged, listing specific examples. Any ideas I am lost.

A "social norm" is basically what is normal for the mass. For instance, it is normal for men to wear men's clothing and women to wear women's clothing. When someone breaks with that, they are going against the social norm. Of course, this is a very crude example and rather outdated. But, hopefully the example better explains what a social norm is or could be defined as. It is just what the whole of society considers normal. Social norms can be broken down into various categories as well. An attitude, behavior, like or dislike, sexuality, mannerism, or personality are among the things that can be defined by social norms. One attitude, behavior, like or dislike, sexuality, mannerism, or personality can be defined as normal by society and the other abnormal. This is the social norm in action.
