can these new applications and groups people are joining on facebook, really track the number of times they have visited their profile?

No its just a ploy for you to join their group, some applications like that can actually hack your account. Only join groups for the fun of it not for these so called new inventions. None of them work!

Answer to this question is simply: "NO!" All those groups are fake and used mostly for advertising, and sometimes they send private messages containing links to phishing sites, so they can steal password. And all of the applications are the same thing as groups. And those applications that you see on few profiles don't work either because When you view a facebook profile, all the applications you see (and therefore including any trackers) are actually cache and static. They don't run any code by default and therefore there is no way of logging profile views. Even images are cached.
The apps seen on the profile only do run code when a button is clicked, it is at this point we can track who has viewed the profile, but it also means that the user is only known if they want to make themselves known.
