What are some good reasons that a young adult, who is finally becoming financially independent may develop social and/or emotional problems?

Because he or she, like the rest of us, is constantly bombarded by conflicting messages and directives from advertising in all of its overt and covert forms. But this person is now crossing a threshold where he or she can act upon those programmed impulses. Also, in our culture, financial clout is equated with power, and while there are many examples of power being wielded without compassion, there are very few examples of it being directed thoughtfully and responsibly. Make no mistake, to use economic power (or any other kind) without compassion and responsibility is an act of a socially or emotionally disturbed mind, the two go hand in hand.
