why can't I download facebook on my ipod touch?

So, I've had my iPod for a good 3 years now, and back when I had a different internet server with a wifi connection I was able to download Facebook, etc. Anyways after sometime I dropped the server I was with and I'm now with century link, after having it for some time I've now discovered my iPod will run on this server lol. ANYWAYS! I tried downloading Facebook and Kik messenger on my iPod and it's telling me I must update to ios 6 in order to download these apps ? Um, before I never had a problem downloading Facebook but now I do. Don't tell me I literally would have to buy a newer version to download this app? lol if I do that would totally suck. If not, is there a way I can update my iPod, so that it will download these apps? It's been so long sense I've used it. It's been sitting around collecting dust.

Some apps requires iOs 6 or later software to be downloaded.
Because they dont support the earlier softwares anymore. So you do have to update your ipod touch if you want full access to those apps. If you cant anymore, then you'd have to buy a new one or you can't download apps that doesnt support your software like facebook.

if its Saying you Need the IOS 6 than you Have to Get The Newer IOS in Order to Download That App a Lot of Apps Now Require That Version At Least Which i Dont Think you Can Get Without Buying a New I Touch Sorry
