Can you tell me what a hashtag is or what it is for?

What do people use a hashtag for, why is it called a hashtag, and where do you use it...I want to know what it means...

this is a hashtag. It is most commonly associated with Twitter, but it can be used on other sites as well. It is a reference. If you watch TV, you will see shows where people say to tweet something # thenameoftheshoworsomethinglikethat and your tweet will be on the show. So that's a hashtag!
