No social website (be it Facebook, MySpace, Y! 360, Blogger etc.) provides any privacy. I heard a nice rule of thumb to live by:

Post your personal information thinking it would get posted at the front page of the biggest paper in your country.

If you don't want pictures of yourself in the newspaper, don't publish them online. If you don't want the newspaper to publish about your party where you completely blacked out, don't write about it in your blog ;-)

I wouldn't put anything too personal on Facebook. It is not a very private site. I wonder who invented facebook. Was it the government? A marketing company? WHere did it come from?

I don't think anything is totally secure on the web but, you can tighten down your information on there and allow only your friends to access your information but, I do believe that if there was a legal issue then the authorities could and would be able to gain this information.

My best advice to anyone is to not put anything on the web that you wouldn't want anyone else to know.

In today's society, stalkers and opportunists abound. If you post your information on a public website, be prepared to be harassed or exploited. I use MySpace and Facebook, but limit my information posted and use an alternate e-mail address in those places. As the sargeant used to say on Hill Street Blues, "be careful out there."
