how does one get friends on Facebook?

I have been on Facebook for nearly a year now and so far no one has wanted to be a friend on there. My page has my interests and other information and i notice that some on my classmates in College have over 300 friends on theirs. In fact everyine I know has over 200 friends on their facebook friends. Is Facebook not a place where you can meet people and network? Maybe I need to turn a setting on so that people can add me. I even tried to add a few friends by myself just by brousing and asking them to add me as a friend. So far i have had no response from anyone I asked. Do I need to advertise or something?

Facebook typically is for connecting with people you know or are acquainted with. Most people do not search for random friends or browse for other people with interests similar to theirs.

The best way to get friends is to start friend-requesting classmates and people in their networks. Once you are connected to many others, it will be easier for other people to see your profile popping up and they may start adding you.

The only facebook "Friends" I have are people I know in real life. Randomly spamming people with invites is not the way to go
