Our date tonight was super awkward. Why? Any help?
I met a girl last weekend who seemed really outgoing and interested. She approached me, twice at that, and even called me handsome as her opener on the second approach. We exchanged numbers and agreed to dinner sometime. That dinner was tonight.

And it was...really awkward. She showed up, and looked nice too. However...she just didn't reciprocate conversation. This made things really forced and awkward. I would ask her a question, she'd answer (her demeanor was either polite or friendly, can't tell which), and that would be it. I would either need to ask more questions or volunteer information about myself to fill in the inevitable dead silent gaps that popped up. I was pretty much flailing in the wind much of the time, hoping SOMETHING would stick and it didn't. I was clearly nervous as the night wore on, sure she could tell. She was so talkative before, I did not anticipate this at all.

As I drove her back, I asked if she was free next week, and she said she couldn't say. She said she didn't know yet. To be fair, she DOES have finals week next week (different school calendar here), so she might not be lying. In any case, I outright chose to friendzone myself at the end, suggesting we meet up next time with some of her friends that I've met before who seemed nice.

I sent her a friend request on Facebook and she immediately accepted. She didn't have to, as our chances of meeting again if she ignores me are basically zero, but it still may just be politeness. In any case, what the heck happened? How did someone who was seemed so talkative turn out like this? What did I do wrong? Is this even remotely salvageable?

She could have just been really nervous, especially if you guys dnt know each other well. Or like you said she has a lot going on atm. Maybe there are other issues going on in her personal life that she could have been dealing with (depression, anxiety). If she added you on Facebook she obviously likes you to some degree.
