I think Google Adsense Image Ads are the way to go for paid ads. Doubleclick looks good also, but that is also owned by Google. The text ads can make your site look less professional -- when is the last time you saw them on a huge, reputable site like Twitter or Facebook?

You also need to generate A LOT of traffic in order to make a decent amount of money from these ads. Your traffic also needs to buy after they click on ads a reasonable amount of time, or Google will categorize your traffic as unlikely to buy and you will make even less money per click.

Signing up for AdSense is pretty easy, you just have to go to https://www.google.com/adsense and sign up.

It depends. Most advertisement payout is calculated by "cost-per-click" (Google Adsense). So it all depends on what type of advertisement it is (a link or a picture) and how much the advertiser pays per click. A good way to learn about CPC (cost per click) it to use Google Adwords: Keywords tool. If you type in a keyword or phrase into the tool, you can choose the "show estimated Avg. Cost per click" on the drop down menu. For more information about making money from a blog or website, read this guide:

To see how much a site makes per day in ad revenue, check out the site http://www.websiteoutlook.com.

Alot of semi-popular sites make like $250 per day. Sites like myspace and facebook make like $300,000.

I think the most popular ad type is google's adsense. Also, i think its the most trusted. https://www.google.com/adsense/login/en_US/
