Please help..Facebook mutual friend question driving me crazy?

I have a friend on my Facebook who has their friend list set to private so I can only see our mutual friends. However if I search for someone who I am not friends with but I know my friend is friends with them , how come I can only see my other mutual friends in common and my friend does not show as a mutual friend?
Thanks for your help. How come though the people who aren't shown as mutual friends with my friend can like my friends status'

if Someone Does Not Show as a Mutual Friend With Somebody That Means That Person is Not Friends With That Person So There For They Are Not a Mutual Friend
