How do I generate buzz for a college student market ?
I am working for a private tutoring service at a large state university and I have a new service I need to market. Traditional direct mail isn't working and I need to generate some buzz. What are some cost-effective ways to do that?

I have access to facebook and blogger.

Try using social networking sites that target your demographic. Some sites to consider:

http://www.campusblender.com
http://www.myspace.com
http://www.friendster.com

Also, depending on your budget, try some media buying....

Talk to the guy that runs:

http://thecollegemarketer.blogpsot.com

and see if you can do some sort of joint venture with him... He can get your site out there to a large college demographic if he gets something in return and it may not have to be of monetary value. I think it'd be worth a shot.

When I was in college (large state school also), I would chalk every chalkboard in every classroom of all of the main buildings on campus with the info for whatever event I was promoting. I would also do chalk sidewalks with the info. Put up flyers in high traffic areas, advertise in the school paper, get professors you have contact with to make announcements in large lectures (or sneak in, yell and leave). You could also solicit giveaways from local businesses to use for a sweepstakes or for radio tradespend on the campus station. Get a crazy costume and hand out flyers, steal any class email lists and send out announcements, and of course, network with anyone who will listen.

Try contacting the local College Newspaper not of the larger university have them at the school or see if they offer advertising space on the student website.

Have you thought also about buying advertising space on the sport programs that they hand out at the games.

I don't know what your advertising budget is but these are just ideas.

Oh one more may want to contact the counslers office at the college and let the guidence counslers know the service you have.

Best of Luck
